Happy 2009 book lovers! Alright, I realize I'm about months late with this newsletter but hopefully it will be worth it for you. Robin and I have been working on some changes to the bookstore that we hope will make your experience with us even more exciting. Our five year anniversary is swiftly approaching and we've decided to give the store a makeover. Here is a brief overview of some of our changes: We've created a small seating area at the front of the store near the espresso bar; fiction has flip flopped and is now on the opposite wall; the children's area is in front center portion of the store; we've ceased carrying magazines and our cards now occupy that space. We still have our sitting area in the back of the store that can be used for meetings, book groups, or just hanging out.
The physical changes are just the starting point for us as we head into Spring. Look for a full schedule of events, author visits, new programs, and more! Local author updates:
Peg Kehret
We've received great news about some previously out of print titles by Peg. Bone Breath and the Vandals, Desert Danger, The Ghost Followed Us Home, Race to Disaster, Screaming Eagles, Backstage Fright, The Flood Disaster, the Blizzard Disaster, and The Secret Journey are all back in circulation. We've got an order of these highly sought after titles coming in during the first part of April so be sure to look for them!
Peg is also part of an anthology due out on March 24 entitled Recycle This Book. This book includes essays from over 100 children's authors about how we all can help make our planet a greener place.
Joni Sensel
Joni's third book has recently been released! Farwalker's Quest is a classic fantasy quest story for youth. Joni also has Reality Leak and The Humming of Numbers currently available at the bookstore. Look for an event with Joni in the future.
Kaya McLaren
Enumclaw native and current Washington State resident Kaya McLaren is re-releasing her second novel, On the Divinity of Second Chances, in April. As part of her author tour, Kaya will be joining us on May 16th for a discussion on forgiveness and second chances. More details will be forthcoming but be sure to mark the date on your calendar.
Mandy Hubbard
Enumclaw native Mandy Hubbard's debut novel for teens will be hitting our shelves on June 11. Prada and Prejudice is about a modern girl's time travelling misadventures in 1815 England. We'll be sending out more information about an event in the coming months. Book picksI've been trying to catch up on my reading the last few weeks and wanted to share a some thoughts on a few books.
The Piano Teacher by Janice K. Lee
The characters are infuriating and I was highly irritated by the ending but I find myself talking a lot about The Piano Teacher. Lee's
narrative switches between 1942 and 1953 Hong Kong, following the story of two characters and the secrets threaten to destroy them. Lee's account of the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the aftermath of the occupation, and the impact of the British in the city was truly fascinating.
Patient Zero
by Jonathan Maberry
If you like action/horror books, this is definitely a title for you. Maberry create
a reality where the terrorist threat is zombies, though there are deeper and more complex forces at work then meets the eye. Fast-paced & intelligent (and occasionally extremely graphic), Patient Zero keeps you on your toes from beginning to end!
